We’re celebrating diversity in art and giving away one annual membership with a hop through the Get Messy Creative Team. To enter, just leave a comment on the blogs in the hop. The more blog comments you leave, the higher your chance of winning! Winner will be announced on Saturday. At the end of this post just leave a comment and then follow the link to the next person on the hop. My blog hop post is about looking back to see how my art journaling has developed and how doing that has given me a real boost to keep going.
Sometimes looking back helps you work out where you want to go next or find some extra energy to get you moving forward again. Well anyway that’s what happened to me when I was writing this blog post for the Get Messy Creative Team Blog Hop . I got the idea to look back at my old pages from my creative team member friend Tanyalee Kahler who has been inspiring me since I very first started checking out Get Messy way back before it was open to new members.
I started by collecting images I wanted to use to tell my art journaling story so far and as I looked at them I could remember making them, remember tutorials I’d watched, art supplies I suddenly “needed” to have and prompts I had tried. I can remember how I felt, what inspired me and even which room of the house I was in when I was creating. It’s like each page has it’s own little story which is hidden to everyone except me. Oh my goodness this was like a major a-hah moment ! I’m creating memories in a whole new to me way!
I don’t know if I have a style yet, but I can see myself in all of these pages and I can see how by trying new things and persevering that I have become a more comfortable art journaler. Maybe it’s the mindfulness that comes with creating that infuses the pages with memory. Maybe it’s just something that happens, but looking back has given me new insights and a renewed excitement to keep going on this creative journey. Yay!
Do you ever do this ? Maybe flick back through a sketchbook, read past blog posts or look at projects you’ve finished ( or started ) and feel more motivated to keep pursuing your hobby/craft/art ? Do find your journals hold memories that you didn’t even know they did ? Please leave a comment in the comments section for a chance to win a Get Messy Art journal membership ( or just so I can read your thoughts on this). I hope you have a chance to visit a few other perhaps new to you blogs as well on this blog hop. FYI if you are keen to win, each comment goes in the draw ! Next person in the hop is the super creative Julia at JulesTea and you can check out her inspiring art on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/jules_tea/
Emily, what a wonderful post! It’s so cool to see an art journaler’s progression (I saw Tanyalee’s too). Everyone comes to the craft with certain skills and then with the Get Messy inspiration and tutorials the style shifts and changes and morphs, yet the basic person is still in the work. Thank you!
Thanks Jules! My art space is so cute, but really i just love to take over our big table in the middle of the room, so my space seems to be mainly for storage haha.
Great post! I too look back in my old journals simply to encourage myself to continue to grow. I am always surprised to see the change in my work and also interested to ‘see’ those feelings that come through.
I loooooves Tanya-lee’s look back and I love yours! How fun is it to see how much we have changed?
I have only being doing this for like 4 months but I have already changed sooooo much!
And to answer your question: yes. Sometimes, looking back the things I did, I see feelings I didn’t know I was painting… It lets you learn stuff about yourself.
I love seeing how your pages have changed through time. I like looking back on my old scrapbook pages to see how I’ve developed, but I would never change them.
Thank you , and yes looking back on scrapbooking is another great example. I’m with you, now I’d do it differently but I wouldn’t change what I’ve already done. Good luck !
I have not done “art” much through the years so I don’t have that look back on, unfortunately. But I did scrapbook for a time and make cards and write my name 100 times trying to improve my handwriting. And recently a friend posted a photo of a card that I made her years ago – a simple one but written in calligraphy. It was the best thing to know that she had kept it all this time. It was nice to be reminded that creativity in some shape or form has always been a part of me. Wow – sorry for the long comment but thanks for making me reflect! 🙂
How nice to be reminded that creativity has always been a part of you. I think that is important and helps to keep it alive. I remember I used to love making things and writing stories when I was a girl . Good luck !
Love, love, love your pages, Emily. I agree about memories associated with journal pages. I always pick a word for the year and journal about it at the beginning of a new year and when I see those pages am reminded how it has guided me throughout. Thanks for the hop and chance to win a Get Messy Art Journaling membership. Cheers!
just realized it’s nearly Saturday here, hope I’m not too late for a chance at the membership, but even so, this has been a great hop – love your retrospective of pages!
It’s very encouraging to see styles evolve and change. I see this too in the scrapbooking pages I made over the years (started art journaling just recently). Thank you for sharing your journey.
I enjoyed your post. I have a bin full of old journals and love to look back. It is amazing how looking at past works can recall memories and seasons of life. I think you found a powerful way to capture your story. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for showing us how you started out – makes it seem less daunting for beginners! I’m a mental health practitioner and I run my own business. I’m about to launch some youth Art journalling workshops and would love to win the Get Messy membership so I can share the wealth of information and inspiration with my clients.
Thank you for letting us see your journey! I love that art journals hold memories in form of colors, because sometimes there are memories that can’t b explained by words!
Gorgeous pages and progression through your process Emily. I can resonate with the sense of remembering where you were/how you felt when you flick back through your pages. Love that! xx
Emily, thanks for your inspiration. I always enjoy looking back and learning from what has gone before.
